Dealing With Work Related Stress

Work related stress has a tendency to affect your life far beyond the confines of your office environment.

It’s easy to take not only your work home but also the symptoms of feeling stress.

This means work related issues will not only hinder your professional performance but also your ability to thrive in personal and family relationships.

I'm sure you don't need me to point this out, right? It's your daily experience!

Let's explore the symptoms to be aware of and then I'll offer you real solutions that work to eliminate stress from your life.

Symptoms of Work Related Stress

I encourage you to pay close attention to the common signs of stress. Identifying how you’re experiencing stress is vital for determining how you’re going to overcome it.

You may notice changes in “normal” behavior.

This could include:

  • Trouble sleeping
  • Sleeping more often or longer than you normally would
  • Eating too much
  • Loss of appetite
  • Tendency to work less
  • Creating excuses to take a day or afternoon off
  • Mood swings

You may experience emotional distress, such as:

  • Feelings of loneliness
  • Feeling “low”, negative or depressed
  • Loss of confidence in your abilities
  • Lack of motivation
  • Increased negative self-talk
  • Becoming increasingly emotional as you react to work related situations or family life

Mental conditions can arise from your higher stress level:

  • Lack of concentration
  • Failed memory
  • Indecision
  • Confusion

Dealing With Worry

One of the major reasons work related stress can become overbearing is a tendency to obsess on each issue you feel needs fixing.

It causes you to lose your ability to stay “present”.

Instead of mentally being aware of your present moment you’re either focusing your brain power on what may have gone “wrong” yesterday or possible danger lurking “out there” in the future.

You may have a client asking for major changes mid-project, a boss demanding a large project to be wrapped up too soon based on his or her deadline, or any number of other situations.

The key is to focus on exactly what you can do right now.

When you're worrying about what may happen next week if you don’t please your superiors or obsess on the fact that you didn’t head a problem off at the pass yesterday it’s only going to increase your levels of stress. 

Take a deep breath and ask, “What can I do immediately to get me one small step closer to handling this situation?”

Then commit to acting and just do it. Get it done. It’s amazing what “finishing” does to our stress levels.

Additional Ways to Stress Less

I’ve identified a formula for living a stress free life I call ERASE.

Using my ERASE formula you can quickly find ways to actively beat stress. Here are a few quick examples:

  • Environment – Use exercise
  • Rejuvenation – Get plenty of rest
  • Awareness – Actively work toward loving yourself
  • Strategy – Work out an overall plan to stress less
  • Equip – Use tools such as music and essential oils
